Iron County

 

Iron County, Michigan was organized in 1885 from territory taken from Marquette and Menominee counties and was named for the valuable iron ore found within its borders. While Iron County was first developed as a major center for iron mining and the timber industry, it has become increasingly popular for tourism in recent years and enjoys a growing influx of tourists who come to ski, snowmobile, hunt, fish, hike, bike, and enjoy the natural beauty. Additional communities within Iron County include Caspian, Gaastra, Alpha, and Amasa. Population was 11,631 in the 2020 census. Learn more here.
